MaximsNewsNetwork: 14 August 2009 - UNMIL / MONUC: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wraps up her seven-nation Africa tour. Wrapping up her seven-nation Africa tour, U.S Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in the Liberian capital, Monrovia on Thursday (13 August). Clinton spoke to reporters about Liberia and US relations and specific topics including corruption and development. She said that the Obama administration wanted to send a very clear message of its commitment to developing an even stronger and closer relationship with African governments, especially with the people of Africa. The Secretary of State stressed that Liberians should continue to speak out against corruption and commended the actions that have been taken by President Sirleafs government, adding that new anti-corruption laws now have to be implemented. Liberia is recovering from fourteen years of civil war that crippled the nations economy and infrastructure. Earlier in the week, the Secretary of State visited Goma, in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where she met with the President of the DRC Joseph Kabila. In Goma, she condemned acts sexual violence committed against women, underscoring the importance of ending impunity for military offenders, as well as cutting off funds to militias operating in the area and resolving the regions underlying political tensions. Secretary of State Clinton also and visited the Mugunga Refugee camp and inspected a parade of MONUC peacekeepers.
