John Cleveland: 20 Outstanding Los Angeles Designers, 1986

John Cleveland started as an art director at Doyle Dane Bernbach. In less than a year, he switched to design because he felt that design seem more permanent and had more substance to it. In the early sixties, John formed a partnership called,"The Company," and his firm grew rapidly while acquiring major clients such as American Telecommunications, S.D. Warren Paper Co., Tandum Corp., Neilsen Research, and Home Savings and Loan Association. Cleveland's firm won a gold Medal in the Los Angeles Art Directors Show, and many awards in major shows in the 1960's and '70's. John believes that type was designed to be read, and not munipulated.
