Favorite Artists: Charles Russell

This is for my friend, NYCity99, who wanted to see both Charles Russell and Frederic Remington, two of America's great frontier artists. Charles Marion Russell was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1864. When he was 15, he went west to be a cowboy, ending up in Montana where he spent the next 11 years. Frederick Remington was THE painter of the West at the time, but Russell began to sketch and paint for various publications. When Remington died in 1908, Russell's career as an artist took off and he became the pre-eminent painter of Native Americans and cowboy subjects. He completed more than 4,000 paintings in his lifetime, and they regularly sell for extremely high prices. For music, we have American composer Aaron Copland's "An Outdoor Overture."
