A Statement for Non-Exclusion -- Dr. Ng Poon Chew (1866-1931 **View LIVE, May 9, 2007 == see http://Remembering1882.org for details** In recognition of the 125th year since the passage of the nation's first immigration law, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, CHSA presents this sneak preview of "A Statement for Non-Exclusion," a museum theater work-in-progress by CHSA Artist in Residence Charlie Chin. In the early twentieth century, San Francisco-based newspaper editor Ng Poon Chew was the public face of opposition to Chinese Exclusion and its abuses. The learned reverend took part in local and national conferences debating the future of U.S. immigration policy, and, in addition to publicizing particular immigration cases in his newspaper, the Chung Sai Yat Po (Chinese-West Daily), brought new information to light by authoring the fact-filled dossiers, The Treatment of the Exempt Classes of Chinese in the United States (1908), and, co-authored with Irish American Patrick J. Healy, 1905's A Statement for Non-Exclusion. CHSA's Remembering 1882 project explores the historical debate around the Exclusion Act from its origins through its full repeal in 1968, the civil rights struggle of Chinese Americans and allies, and the historic importance of habeas corpus in the Chinese American community.
