St. Louis born, Betty Grable (birth name Elizabeth Ruth Grable), broke into films in 1930 at age of thirteen when her mother exaggerated her daughter's age. She was a Goldwyn Girl and appeared in minor roles for most of the decade until she landed a starring role -- along with Don Ameche and Carmen Miranda -- in DOWN AGRENTINE WAY (1940).
