Giant Horsefly (Tabanus atratus)

I accidentally clocked this fellow with my paddle while canoeing in the Great Dismal Swamp. It actually took me a second to figure out it was a fly and not a wasp or bumblebee. Try not to think of it as a big bug, so much as a small, blood-sucking bird.
