Robert Taylor plays Air Force Colonel Paul Tibbets, the man who piloted the B-29 bomber Enola Gay that dropped the atomic bomb over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The story begins -told in flashback by his wife Lucey Tibbets (Eleanor Parker) - when he returned to the United States in March 1943 from North Africa where he was flying combat missions as B-17 pilot and squadron commander. Maj. Gen. Vernon C. Brent" (Larry Keating), tells Paul that he will be sent to Wichita to test a new four-engine propeller-driven heavy bomber, the B-29, then in development. After long months of work away from his family in Washington, Brent lets him knows that he was one of the few men chosen for work on the most important project of the war. He acquaints Tibbets with the "Manhattan Project", a U.S. Army program launched in 1941 dedicated to researching, building and testing the atomic bomb and tells him that he was selected to organize and train a unit (which became the 509th Composite Group) at Wendover Army Air Field, Utah, unit assigned to carrying out the mission of dropping the first atomic mass destruction weapon against Japan, the only way government found to get Japanese rendition. This was a top secret mission therefore it was closely guarded, Tibbets was the only one who knew of the group's mission and he commanded the men without telling them precisely what it was they were being trained to drop; he could not tell anyone about this not even his wife. Maj. Bill Uanna (James Whitmore), security watchdog at the base, suggests that families be brought to live on base in order to make it seem like a normal life. After Lucy gives birth to second child, she joins her husband along with their other son Paul Jr. Although at first they are happy to be together, the relationship between them begins to deteriorate. Paul is a troubled and strained man struggling between his duty and his conscience and he cannot share and express his feelings with his wife openly. Day after day Lucy perceives how his husband becomes more distant and harsh toward her and the children. She doesn't understand why he cannot confide in her what he is doing. She sees his secret assignment simply as damaging their relationship. After he was promoted to the rank of colonel, discussions become more frequent and tough. Finally, he has no choice but to send her away from the training base
