Clair Obscur (ter Brugghen)

Hendrick Jansz. ter Brugghen (Terbrugghen) 1588- 1629 Ter Brugghen was een leerling van Abraham Bloemaert, werkte nauw samen met Dirck van Baburen, en beinvloed door Caravaggio. Constantijn Huygens roemde hem als een van de beste Nederlandse historieschilders, en men verondersteld dat Johannes Vermeer door zijn kleurgebruik werd geinspireerd. Hendrick ter Brugghen wordt gerekend tot de Utrechtse caravaggisten. Terbrugghen was a leading member of the Dutch followers of Caravaggio the so called Dutch Caravaggisti. He was a student of Abraham Bloemaert. Influenced by the art of Caravaggio's chiaroscuro. Ter Brugghen's favorite subjects were half length figures of drinkers or musicians, but he also produced larger scale religious images and group portraits. His paintings have a strong dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as emotionally charged subjects. Even though he died young, his work was wel received and had great influence on others. His treatment of religious subjects can be seen reflected in the work of Rembrandt, and elements of his style can also be found in the paintings of Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer.
