Dave's 2007 China Trip Nanjing (Part 8 - City Wall)

Taiping Rebellion museum and more of the city wall. The Taiping Rebellion is an incredibly interesting portion of Chinese history that unfortunately the west does not know much about. Hong Xiuquan, who led the Taiping movement, at first sought a position as a Qing official. After he failed doing that, he received a religious vision that he was the Chinese son of God and younger brother of Jesus Christ. He was incredibly influential in recruiting many to his cause, and conquered vast portions of China, eventually making Nanjing his capital. The totality of deaths caused by the fighting between the Taiping rebels and the Qing forces is estimated to be anywhere from 20 to 30 million.
