(I never claimed to be an expert in fact I tried to make it clear that this isn't my area of expertise. I'll make no bones about it. Some of what I said is based solely on what I've observed. In fact, I'm the last person to look to for insight on Jamaican music) This isn't really such a deviation from my typical postings, ska is somewhat of a distant cousin of punk if you think about it. This original ska from the 60s. Before Reel Big Fish and Might Mighty Bosstones and even before The Specials. Reggae and ska are branches on the same tree. The sounds and style somewhat overlap, though reggae tends to have a slower pace and more spiritual and religious tone. In a nutshell, Jamaicans were inspired by black American music, they develop a genre of their own, it makes its way to the UK where it spawns the (British) rudeboy subculture there as well as the original (UK) skinheads.
