The 1918 - 1919 Influenza Pandemic was a horrible learning experience for all. In the United States a cadre of thousands of osteopathic physicians used their medical skills of the time, including manual forms of manipulation of the entire body to stimulate respiration, the clearing of secretions, increased oxygenation, and the stimulation of the immune system to fight off the devastating effects of that strain of influenza. Published reports of the time gave varying tabulations of improvement and , most importantly survival rates that far exceeded survival of patients treated by non-osteopathic physicians, specifically the MD medical doctors of the time. Survival rates of 10 , 20 and 40 times the rate of patients treated by MDs were published.
