The remarkable resurrection plant Xerophyta

The remarkable resurrection plant Xerophyta humilis reviving after being watered, followed by flowering after a few days. Resurrection plants are widely present in South Africa and are so named because of their ability to survive extreme water loss from their leaves, stems and roots. Our research efforts (see review by scientists; John Moore, Ngoc Tuan Le, Wolf Brandt, Azeddine Driouich and Jill Farrant) are focused on understanding how resurrection plants survive drought, and to apply this knowledge to improve crop plant survival in arid countries.
