Das Madchen - Rosa Wol, soprano

The 3 Lieder (art-songs) from a group of 6 named "Das Madchen" (The Girl") by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, are in fact Nos. 7, 10 and 12 from Opus 9. The rest of the 12 Lieder forming that Opus were composed by her famous brother Felix Mendelssohn. The first 6 Lieder were named "Der Jungling" ("The Boy"). Opus 9 was submitted for publication to Schlesinger, a Berliner publisher, on February 21, 1830. The 3 Lieder by Fanny are: 1. No. 7 Sehnsucht (Longing) / lyrics by Johann Gustav Droysen - about a young person who longs for love but does not yet know whom she loves. 2. No. 10 Verlust (Loss) / lyrics by Heinrich Heine, about his painful love to his cousin Amalie, and - 3. No. 12 Die None (The Nun) / lyrics by Johann Ludwig Uhland, about a young nun who loved a man before she became one, but as a nun she was forbidden to feel emotion for him.
