The time is 1930 - 31 in San Francisco California. 20 years before McCarthyism, 25 before Ayn Rand comes out with :Atlas Shrugged", and 1 year after the "Stock Market Crash" of 1929. "The Allegory of California" was the first work painted by Diego Rivera in the United States. The woman who is in the center of the Mural, that spans from the 10th - 11th floor and onto the ceiling. Here, Diego Rivera displayed his abilities, by being one ot the first in polyangular design, therefore when you cross from the right side of the mural to the left... and back, the eyes of the Sun go from staring at the man in the lower left, to staring at you, also the man will appear to extend out and take on the shape of a woman. During this commission, it was known that there were to be no known recognizable faces. Also, Diego Rivera was to refrain from displaying revolutionary works, therefore he also became reknowned for hiding his beliefs wihin his works. In the lower left hand corner work the mural begins, it is hard to see, but there are miners, and Diego Rivera wanted to show, that all this was created on the backs of man. Diego Rivera had a love and passion for life and mankind, also a known Communist with a rumored love affair with Leon Trotsky (ties to Lenin) as well as Rivera is related to Spanish Nobility , but that is for a later chapter. The woman in the Mural is Helen Wills Moody. Helen Newington Wills Roark (October 6, 1905 January 1, 1998), also known as Helen Wills Moody, was an American tennis player. She has been described as "the first American born woman to achieve international celebrity as an athlete." Wills won 31 Grand Slam titles (singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles) during her career, including seven singles titles at the U.S. Championships, eight singles titles at Wimbledon, and four singles titles at the French Championships. Excluding her defaults at the French Championships and Wimbledon in 1926, she reached at least the final of each Grand Slam singles event she played during her career. Wills also won two Olympic gold medals in Paris in 1924 (singles and doubles), the last year that tennis was an Olympic sport until 1988. Wills was the U.S. girls' singles champion in 1921 and 1922. She won her first women's national title at the age of 17 in 1923, making her the youngest champion at that time. Quick Points on the Mural Besides being on the backs and the work of man, notice Helen Moody's hands. Her left hand is holding fruit and her right hand is in a curious postion which is noted to be having sexual innuendo. The boy holding the Airplane in the center is Peter Stackpole, son of Ralph Stackpole. Notice the Oakland Ship yards up towards the top in the background. These would be the same yards that would make the WWI "Liberty Ships". These would also influence the design of the AT-AT's in Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back, by George Lucas, of which SkyWalker Ranch is north, just past the Golden Gate Bridge. Pacific Stock Exchange http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Stock_Exchange As I am realizing as time goes on, there are fewer and fewer of us, that know the details of this artwork, and since it is hidden within the walls of the Pacific Stock Exchange Tower at 155 Sansome, San Francisco, I feel that this is the least I can do to keep some memory alive of a few details. I also wanted to note, that since I was next to many of the individuals family mentioned, that I truly do not desire to write this as fact or fiction, but to simply display the pieces before you with what history we know of, and let you make up your mind. This is why I will also be posting the links, so that you may further your own research.
