zone time

zone times

zone times, the division of the globe by meridians of longitude into zones where the same time is kept, particularly in ships at sea. The sun crosses each meridian of longitude at its local noon and four minutes later crosses the next degree of longitude at its local noon. Without some system of time zones all chronometers would show the times at their longitude. The world is thus divided into zones of 15° of longitude, and adjacent zones differ from each other by one hour. Zone times are measured east and west of the longitude of Greenwich (0°). Zones east of Greenwich are minus and zones to the west are plus. The longitude of 180°, where zones are +12 and -12, is known as the International Date Line. See also greenwich mean time.
