wort / wərt; wôrt/ • n. 1. [in comb.] used in names of plants and herbs, esp. those used, esp. formerly, as food or medicinally, e.g., butterwort, woundwort. ∎ archaic such a plant or herb. 2. the sweet infusion of ground malt or other grain before fermentation, used to produce beer and distilled malt liquors.
