windrow
windrow, a line of debris lying in slicks roughly parallel to the wind's direction. When the sea is calm, gentle winds blowing across the sea's surface generate counter-rotating vortices of water in the upper few metres of the water. These are named Langmuir circulation cells after the scientist who gave a scientific explanation for their development. The axes of the vortices lie parallel to the wind, and along the lines where they are generating weak converging currents at the surface floating animal life and debris accumulate. In subtropical waters the stinging Portuguese man-of-war and sargasso weed are often lined up along windrows. The floating blue-green alga (Trichodesmium) that gave the Red Sea its name is often aligned in parallel lines on the surface of the Arabian Sea.

windrow
windrow A streak of foam or row of floating debris, aligned in the prevailing wind direction, formed on the surface of a lake or ocean. Where winds blow across a water surface, vertical circulation cells are set up in near-surface waters. These circulation cells are alternately right- and left-handed vortices, and windrows form along the lines of convergence between adjacent cells at the water surface.
