visual binary

visual binary

visual binary A binary star in which the two components are sufficiently well separated to be individually detectable visually or photographically. The brighter star is known as the primary, and the fainter as the secondary, companion, or comes. Even when orbital motion is extremely slow, visual binaries may sometimes be identified from the common proper motion of their components.
