veld or veldt [Du.,=field], term applied to the grassy undulating plateaus of the Republic of South Africa and of Zimbabwe. The veld comprises territory of varying elevation—the high veld (4,000-6,000 ft/1,220-1,830 m), the middle veld (2,000-4,000 ft/610-1,220 m), and the lowveld (500-2,000 ft/150-610 m). The high veld, the largest of the plateaus, is in the Republic of South Africa.
