urban climate The modified surface-layer atmospheric conditions that are caused by the influence of large ‘built-up’ areas. Changes include pollution, reduction in strong wind speeds towards a city centre, turbulence of air around buildings, warming of air by the heat output from city structures, and increased evaporation and removal (drainage and run-off) of water.
