tree fern Tree-like fern of the family Cyatheaceae. Tree ferns grow in tropical and sub-tropical regions, particularly moist mountainous areas. Height: 3–25m (10–80ft). There are 600 species. Phylum Filicinophyta; genus Cyathea.
