treaty of Worms

Worms, treaty of

Worms, treaty of, 1743. In an attempt to gain the balance in the War of the Austrian Succession, Lord Carteret persuaded Maria Theresa and George II to sign the treaty of Worms with Charles Emmanuel of Sardinia, offering him subsidies and territorial concessions in exchange for support. But the move was cancelled by France bringing Spain into the war on her side and the strength of the combined Franco-Spanish fleets held out hopes of a successful Jacobite invasion of Britain. The treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle which concluded the war in 1748 was on the basis of status quo ante bellum.
