Worcester, treaty of

Worcester, treaty of, 1218. After John's death in 1216, he was succeeded by his son Henry III, aged 9. Llywelyn ab Iorwerth had profited from the divisions of John's reign and controlled most of Wales. At Worcester in 1218 his power was acknowledged, he was recognized as Henry's lieutenant during the minority, and the royal castles of Carmarthen and Cardigan were placed in his hands. The accommodation soon broke down.
