Ripon, treaty of
Ripon, treaty of, 1640. The treaty of Ripon brought to an end the second Bishops' War between Charles I and the Scottish covenanters. The Scottish army occupied Newcastle and in September 1640 the royalist garrison of Edinburgh castle surrendered. Charles had little to negotiate with. By the terms of the armistice, the Scots were left in occupation of the six northern counties and were to receive expenses of £860 a day. The final peace settlement was to be concluded in consultation with the English Parliament. The king had lost control of the situation.
