Haddington, treaty of

Haddington, treaty of, 1548. The response of Mary of Guise and the pro-French party to intimidation by the English ‘rough wooing’ of 1544–8 was the treaty of Haddington of 7 July 1548. Mary, queen of Scots, then aged 5, was to marry the dauphin, though Scottish independence was guaranteed. The following month Mary was sent to France to be brought up. The marriage took place in April 1558.

Haddington, treaty of, 1548. The response of Mary of Guise and the pro‐French party to intimidation by the English ‘rough wooing’ of 1544–8 was the treaty of Haddington of 7 July 1548.
