treaty of Greenwich

Greenwich, treaty of

Greenwich, treaty of, 1543. On 1 July 1543, after their defeat at Solway Moss the previous year, the Scots made peace and agreed to a marriage between the infant Queen Mary and Prince Edward, Henry VIII's heir, which would lead to a union of the kingdoms. The terms were repudiated by the Scottish Parliament in December and fighting resumed the following year. Meanwhile, Henry VIII's last campaign against the French faltered.
