tondo
tondo. A painting or relief sculpture of circular shape: the word is Italian for ‘round’. The format became popular in Florence in the 15th century, perhaps as a development of the desco da parto, and was often used in depictions of the Virgin and Child, the ‘perfect’ geometrical form of the circle perhaps being intended to reflect the moral perfection of Christ and his mother. There are famous tondi by Michelangelo in both painting and sculpture: the Holy Family (Uffizi, Florence), known as the Doni Tondo, his only completed panel painting to survive; and two early sculptures of the Virgin and Child, the Taddei Tondo (RA, London) and the Pitti Tondo (Bargello, Florence). All three date from around 1505 and all three are named after the families that commissioned them. Most portrait miniatures are circular, but the word ‘tondo’ is not applied to such small works.
