ME. þwert — ON. þvert, orig. n. of þverr transverse, cross = OE. þwe(o)rh crooked, cross, perverse, OHG. dwerh, G. zwerch, Goth. þwairhs cross, angry :- Gmc. *þwerχwaz, f. IE. *twerk- *twork-, as in L. torquēre twist.
Hence thwart vb. †oppose XIII; †extend from side to side of XV; †place crosswise XVI; foil, frustrate. |

thwart
thwart, the transverse wooden seat in a rowing boat on which the oarsman sits. Thwarts are normally supported by grown wooden knees (i.e. grown so that the grain of the wood follows the curve of the knee), fitted to the ribs of the two sides. In some boats they are also supported by hanging knees. These are fixed to the ribs above the level of the thwarts so that the thwart is held securely between a knee above it and one below it.
