sustainability
sustainability(sustainable development) Economic development that takes full account of the environmental consequences of economic activity and is based on the use of resources that can be replaced or renewed and therefore are not depleted. The concept was introduced in the late 1970s and was emphasized strongly in the World Conservation Strategy, published in 1980 by the IUCN in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme and the World Wildlife Fund (now the World Wide Fund for Nature). Our Common Future, published in 1983 by the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission), defined it as development that ‘seeks to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future’.
