superstring theory

superstring theory

superstring theory Theory that attempts to explain the properties of elementary particles and the interactions between them. It combines quantum theory and relativity, especially to explain nuclear forces and the force of gravitation (see fundamental forces). Superstrings are hypothetical one-dimensional objects about 10−35m long that require a 10-dimensional universe to accommodate them. Their use in quantum calculations predicts the existence of gravitons, the particles believed to be involved in gravitational interaction. Some scientists believe this theory could explain everything in the universe. See also unified field theory

superstring theory

superstring theory An example of a general class of theories of high-energy physics known as string theories. In string theories, the fundamental objects are not point-like objects (particles) but one-dimensional objects known as strings. Superstrings are strings which also have the property of supersymmetry (i.e. every particle which is a boson has a partner which is a fermion). The superstring theory tries to describe all classes of observed elementary particle in terms of properties of such strings. The theory is entirely speculative, but may have some implications for the physics of the very early Universe.
