stony meteorite
stony meteorite A meteorite composed primarily of silicate minerals, usually with some nickel-iron; also known as an aerolite. Around 95% of all meteorites observed to fall are stones. However, they are difficult to distinguish from terrestrial rocks, and many go unnoticed. Their fusion crust is thicker than that of irons and is often black in colour, either dull or shiny. The interior of stones is usually grey or dark grey, and granular in texture. Stony meteorites are divided into two main subtypes: chondrites, which comprise 82% of all observed falls, and achondrites.

stony-iron meteorite
stony-iron meteorite A meteorite composed of nickel–iron and silicate minerals in roughly equal proportions; also known as a siderolite. Such meteorites were apparently formed within asteroid-sized parent bodies. Stony-iron meteorites comprise only about 1% of observed falls. Four groups of stony-iron meteorites have been defined, the two main ones being the pallasites and mesosiderites. The other two, the lodranites and siderophyres, are extremely rare.

stony meteorite
stony meteorite (asiderite) Meteorite type consisting mainly of rock-forming silicates (olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase) with some nickel-iron; more than 90% of meteorites seen to fall are of this type. Stony meteorites are referred to as chondrites or achondrites, depending on the presence or absence of chondrules.
