sting·ray / ˈstingˌrā/ • n. a bottom-dwelling marine ray with a flattened diamond-shaped body and a long poisonous serrated spine at the base of the tail. Two families: Dasyatidae (the long-tailed stingrays) and Urolophidae (the short-tailed stingrays). Its several species include the long-tailed common stingray (Dasyatis centrourus).

stingray Any of several species of bottom-dwelling elasmobranch fish that live in marine waters and in some rivers in South America. It has a flattened body, with wing-like fins around the head. It has a long, slender tail which can inflict a venomous sting to stun prey, and can cause injury to human beings. Width: to 2.1m (7ft). Family Dasyatidae.
