stela

stela

stela or stele (plural: stelae or steles) (Greek: ‘standing block’). An upright slab, usually of stone, that serves as a grave marker or other monument. The term is chiefly applied to the ancient Mediterranean world (particularly classical Greece), but similar objects are found in many other times and places. Greek grave stelae were sometimes plain, but by the 6th century bc they were often carved or painted.
