statistical significance

statistical significance The condition in which the difference between two means is equal to or greater than 1.96 times the standard error of the mean. Since there is an approximately 20:1 likelihood that such a difference occurs by chance, 95 per cent of the means will be enclosed, assuming a normal distribution of the data. See also confidence limits.
