sramanera

śrāmaṇera

śrāmaṇera (Skt.; Pāli, sāmaṇera). A novice monk, someone who has taken pravrajyā, or lower ordination, but not upasaṃpadā, or higher ordination. Because the Prātimokṣa rules do not apply to them, they do not take part in the recital of the Prātimokṣa on Poṣadha (Pāli, uposatha) days. A female novice is known as a śrāmaṇerī (Pāli, sāmaṇerī).
