spandrel
spandrel. Architectural term for the approximately triangular space between the outer curve of an arch and the rectangular frame enclosing the arch, or for the wall surface between two adjacent arches; more loosely the term is applied to any triangular area with curved sides, as in the series of vaulting compartments above the windows in the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo with images of the ancestors of Christ. Spandrels are often treated ornamentally, with painting or sculpture, although the shape does not readily lend itself to decorative exploitation. Winged figures, however, have often found favour in this position—victories on triumphal arches and angels in medieval churches.
