spalliera
spalliera. An Italian term originally used to describe a painting set into the wall panelling of a room in the Renaissance period and now by extension applied to any similar painted piece of furniture of the time, such as the headboard or footboard of a bed or the backboard of a cassone. No spalliere survive in situ as wall panelling, but detached examples are in numerous museums; they are usually difficult to distinguish from detached cassone panels, as they tend to be similar in size and shape.
