skylight
skylight, a glazed window frame, usually in pairs, set at an angle in the deck of a ship to maximize light and ventilation to a compartment below, and protected with brass rods. They were only seen on smaller vessels. Once very common in yachts, they were difficult to keep watertight and were superseded by hatches with transparent plastic tops or by transparent panels, though they are still to be seen in classic yachts.
