skipjack

skipjack, a work boat of the east coast of the USA, sloop rigged with a Bermudan mainsail and a foresail set on a bowsprit. They were hard-chined boats with a large wooden centreboard. A feature of the skipjack was the mast which was rigged to rake some 25° aft to enable cargo to be hoisted on board by means of the main halyard. Skipjacks were introduced in Chesapeake Bay in about 1860 and largely superseded the sharpie.
