shot put
shot put Field event in which an athlete throws a heavy metal ball from a position close to the neck by means of a swift extension of the arm. The athlete must remain inside the throwing circle. Men throw a 7.3kg (16lb) shot; women a 4kg (8lb 13oz) shot. The shot put has been an Olympic event since 1909.
