shim

shim A small piece of data inserted into a program or a file in order to achieve a particular effect. See, for example, PIXEL SHIM: a PIXEL inserted into a WEB PAGE in order to achieve a formatting effect. It has its origins in engineering, especially in the engineering of aircraft and mechanical devices.
