shield volcano

shield volcano A wide volcano, usually several kilometres in diameter, with gentle slopes, formed from solidified layers of very fluid basaltic lava. Typical examples on Earth are the Hawaiian volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa, which have slopes of 4–10°. Lunar domes appear to be similar to shield volcanoes, and many shield volcanoes are found on Venus.
