sheer legs
sheer legs, or sheers, a temporary structure of two or three spars raised at an angle and lashed together at the point of intersection, with their heels placed on a plank or shoe. With the aid of a tackle secured to this point, the sheers could be used for lifting heavy weights on board ship where derricks were not available. Their main original use was for lifting in and out the lower masts of square-rigged ships.
