shamal

shamal

shamal, the name given to the prevailing wind from the north-west in the Persian Gulf. It sets in without warning, and in June and July blows more or less continuously. At other times it can last between one and five days, and is so dusty, as well as hot, that it can obscure visibility quite badly. Its speed rarely exceeds 48 kph (30 mph).
