seventy
seventy Seventy elders accompanied Moses (Exod. 24: 9); and seventy disciples were sent out by Jesus (Luke 10: 1–7); seventy years was predicted to be the period of the Exile (Jer. 25: 12), though it turned out to be less. Seventy years was regarded as a whole human lifespan (Ps. 90: 10). Peter was told that we are to forgive seventy times seven (Matt. 18: 21–2). Thus, seventy indicates completeness, as being a multiple of seven (the number of days in the week), which is therefore itself significant; seven men were to help the apostles (Acts 6: 1–6), and seven Churches are addressed in Rev. 2–3.
