sept
sept. In the Early Modern period, English and Anglo‐Irish commentators used the term ‘sept’, probably a variant form of ‘sect’ (a subdivision) also used in this context, to denote the basic corporate family group within Gaelic and Gaelicized lordships. The sept was defined by patrilineal descent within one or two generations of the ruling ceannfine, or family head, although, theoretically, Brehon law allowed for up to four generations (the derbfine). The sept had military, political, and legal functions and responsibilities within the lordship. It was a distinct group from the lineage, a wider family group which in addition to known relatives, included those who claimed relationship through a common surname.
