royal, the square sail set immediately above the topgallant sail in square-rigged ships. It is usually set on an extended topgallant mast although sometimes on a separate fidded royal mast. This spar was usually fidded on the forward side of the topgallant mast but was occasionally fidded on the aft side. It was originally known as the topgallant royal.
