retrochoir
retrochoir. Portion of a large church behind the retable or reredos of the high-altar, in apsidal arrangements including parts of the north and south chancel-aisles on either side as well as the area to the east. It is essentially the volume bounded by the sanctuary and the chapels to the east, as in Winchester Cathedral, Hants.
