rem n. roentgen equivalent mammal the quantity of ionizing radiation that, when absorbed by a human or other mammal, produces the physiological effect equivalent to that produced by the absorption of one roentgen of X-ray or gamma radiation; it is used in connection with calculating the effects of nuclear fallout.
