rab·bet / ˈrabit/ • n. a step-shaped recess cut along the edge or in the face of a piece of wood, typically forming a match to the edge or tongue of another piece: [as adj.] a rabbet joint. • v. (-bet·ed , -bet·ing ) [tr.] make a rabbet in (a piece of wood). ∎ [tr.] join or fix (a piece of wood) to another with a rabbet.

rabbet, from the word rebate, an incision in a piece of timber to receive the ends or sides of planks which are to be secured to it. It is also used as a verb, so that the keel of a wooden ship is rabbeted to receive the sides of the garboard strakes, and the stem and sternpost are similarly rabbeted to take the ends of the side strakes.
